A hazy local legend claims the Reuben sandwich was born in 1925 in midtown Omaha’s Blackstone Hotel to feed hungry late-night poker players.

Whatever the facts of its origins, today the Reuben is one of Omaha’s proudest legacies.

When the Meadowlarks head indoors for the winter, we took the field as the Omaha Reubens.

Honoring this gloppy delicacy, I created this silly identity for a team as saucy and heartwarming as a toasty Reuben on a chilly Nebraska night.

The moon shapes in the eyes are homage to the Crescent Moon. This beloved tavern, just across Farnam Street from the former Blackstone Hotel, has been the unofficial steward of the Reuben’s legacy for decades.

For the team’s primary logo, I borrowed heavily from the Delmarva Scrapple — a one-game identity in 2018 for the Delmarva Shorebirds of minor league baseball. I traced the bread, and drew the insides myself. I have never eaten scrapple, but would like to.
